Things to Do in Canyon Lake, Texas
Canyon Lake is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River in the U.S. state of Texas. The lake is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) northwest of San Antonio in Comal and Guadalupe counties. It was impounded in 1964, and serves as a drinking water source, recreation area, and fish hatchery.
There are numerous public parks, including Canyon Lake Park, Guadalupe River State Park, and Sattler Recreation Area.
The canyon for which the lake is named was carved by water from the nearby Guadalupe River over a period of around one million years.[1] The first humans to settle the area were Native Americans who built temporary campsites along the river during their hunting trips through the region.
Archaeological evidence suggests that these campsites date back at least 10,000 years.[2]
In 1762, Spanish Missionaries established Mission San Francisco Xavier de los Dolores near present-day New Braunfels.
This mission included land that would later become Canyon Lake.[3] In 1846, after the Mexican War of Independence ended Spanish rule in Mexico, this mission property was sold at auction to John O’Reilly – an Irish immigrant who had settled in San Antonio. A few years later O’Reilly sold his holdings to James Campbell – another Irish immigrant who had also become a successful businessman in San Antonio.
[4]
Campbell used Canyon Lake as a private retreat for himself and his family; however he eventually decided to open it up to others by developing a resort known as “Campbell’s Island”.[5] This resort featured cabins, a dance pavilion, and other amenities – making it quite popular with tourists from nearby cities such as San Antonio.
